A message from Cathy Weirick, Executive Director, regarding COVID-19

Dear Friends of CASA of Kent County,

During this challenging and uncharted time, nothing is more important than the safety, health, and well-being of the children we advocate for, the health and safety of our CASA Volunteers, and our dedicated staff and Board of Directors. We are also thankful to you, the community members who support our mission.

Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-21, called the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Order, directing all Michigan businesses and operations to temporarily suspend in-person operations not necessary to sustain or protect life. Due to this order, we are closing the CASA of Kent County office until April 13, 2020. CASA staff are working from home and, if unaffected by COVID-19, will be checking their email and voicemail regularly. They may also be reached on their personal cell phones.

Due to the “Stay Home Stay Safe” Order, our CASA Volunteers are prohibited from visiting their foster children face-to-face, but we have many alternative ways to check up on our children. We encourage phone calls, FaceTime, Zoom, or other similar video chat applications. While face-to-face interaction is integral to our work, temporary strategies are required and these will help maintain relationships that are so important to our children.

The CASA staff and Board of Directors believe we have an even greater commitment to serve our most vulnerable children in the wake of these current circumstances, and we will work diligently to maintain our role in a foster child’s life and within the court system. We are grateful to be part of such a supportive and responsive community that works together to keep Kent County moving in the right direction.

Thank you, everyone, for your dedication, thoughtfulness, generosity, and concern for those who are struggling. For more information about COVID-19, please visit www.michigan.gov/coronavirus.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay in touch.

Cathy Weirick
